CHILDREN OF THE 68´S

1968 - This year is the symbol of the global youth-protest-movement of the sixties. It is a symbol for the protest against the Vietnam War and for the civil rights movement in the US. It is also a symbol for the rebellion against the "mustiness of thousand years" in German Universities, in German state and society. 1968 stands for "France's May" with its slogan "Fantasy for Power", stands for the "Prague Spring" and a human socialism flattened by soviet tanks. The people initiating the revolt dreamt of political changes, of a fairer and more socially oriented world. They were also anti-authoritarian with a life style somewhere between Che and Rock 'n' Roll, hashish and sex, demonstrations and hope.

The revolt not only had consequences in politics but also changed private relationships, changed everyday life. Communes and anti-authoritarian nurseries were an expression of a new counterculture, quite different from the usual catholic kindergarten round the corner. Children were expected to grow up more liberal and therefore happier. This is 40 years ago.

In his film Jürgen Bevers approaches the subject 1968 from the perspective of the then children that are today, at the age of 40, in the flower of their life; old enough to be able to reflect on the relationships with their parents with a certain detachment. What do the children of famous '68-rebells think about the revolt and their parents' dreams? How did they experience the time and how did it influence them personally and their relationship to their parents? These are questions arousing different and contrary thoughts and answers.
