KASPER KÖNIG'S ADDRESS BOOK

Kasper König is not only one of the most influential art experts and curators  in European post-war history – he is also known for being a non-conformist. Until recently, he was the director of Museum Ludwig in Cologne. In 2009, he received the first Lifetime Achievement Award by the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 2014, he curated the much-discussed Manifesta in St. Petersburg.

Kasper König has a remarkably thick address book. An address book with the world of contemporary art between its pages. In more than 40 years, König has built up an extensive network within the art scene. To follow it would mean travelling around the globe several times.

Together with Kasper König we travel to New York, Paris, Berlin, Zurich, St. Gallen. One of the most important and unconventional international art experts meets artists as diverse as Claes Oldenburg, Nicole Eisenman, Niele Toroni, Sophie Calle, Ayse Erkmen, Monica Bonvicini, Roman Signer and Peter Fischli...

There are excursions to artworks in museums, in town squares or in workshops. The studio is the meeting point. “A studio visit”, says König, “is also a mark of confidence”. With König’s trained eye, we take in a number of works anew – or some even for the very first time – in detail and in a broader context, as well as unpublished works, sketch books and models. While talking to the artists, König explores the studio as a room for ideas, for looking to the past and the future alike. And occasionally something new emerges unexpectedly – an experiment, an opportune creation, a moment of inspiration captured on camera.
